Therapeutic Horsemanship Programs

Our horsemanship and riding sessions include both mounted and unmounted activities as appropriate for our participants. All of our participants will have individualized lesson plans tailored to their goals and needs. We strive to teach independence in horsemanship and riding skills while also benefiting their diagnosis. Both private and group sessions are offered - sessions are held on a weekly basis as this regular consistency aids significantly in the progression of horsemanship and riding skills. Please contact us today for more information on our intake process.

FAQ

  • We serve a wide variety of physical, intellectual, emotional, and behavioral diagnoses. Our participants are children and adults, ages 4 to seniors. All participants must complete an annual Physician's Release signed by their Primary Care Physician which states that Therapeutic Horsemanship and Riding would be appropriate and safe for the participant.

  • Our instructors must hold a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor certification from either PATH International (Professional Association for Therapeutic Horsemanship) or through CECTH (Council for Education and Certification in Therapeutic Horsemanship).

  • Our sessions may include both mounted and unmounted activities based off of what is most appropriate and beneficial to the participant. We believe that it is more important for participants to learn and experience developing a relationship with a horse, which includes activities outside of just riding. These activities could include, but are certainly not limited to, grooming and tacking their horse in preparation for riding, learning equine first aid and barn work, completing exercises off of the horse that would benefit their position in the saddle, and more! Sessions could be a half hour or hour and in either a private or group setting, again all dependent on what is most appropriate for the participant.

  • Sessions are completed on a weekly basis - so each participant comes on a set day and time each week. We try to avoid biweekly or monthly lessons as regular consistency is important for the progress of the participant both physically and mentally. This progress is harder to achieve when sessions are spread out.

  • Therapeutic Horsemanship is an equine assisted activity that is facilitated by a certified therapeutic riding instructor with goals that are horse related, but also benefit the participant physically, intellectually, emotionally, and behaviorally. Hippotherapy is facilitated by a licensed physical, occupational, or speech therapist with goals that are PT, OT, or speech related and utilizes the equine movement as a treatment strategy. Participants who cannot physically hold themselves up without assistance are more appropriate candidates for hippotherapy versus therapeutic horsemanship. Hippotherapy is not currently a service offered by Bridlepath Equine Center.

  • Unfortunately, our sessions are not covered by insurance at this time. External funding sources including, but not limited to, MHIDD or Four Diamonds could be utilized. We also offer a scholarship program for those who qualify. Please reach out for more information if you would like to learn more about that scholarship program.

  • Sessions may be paid for in advance or the day of the participant's session. We accept check, cash, credit, and PayPal.
